Recently, however, I've tried a couple of Schick razors, and I have to say that they are a lot nicer that I expected.

My loyalty to Gilette has been wavering for two reasons:
1. They are no longer a Boston based company.
2. The newest razor, the Gilette Fusion, blades wear out faster than the old Mach III blades. In fact I like the Mach III much better than the Fusion. (Read my review of the Gillette Fusion here.)

I got two Schick Razor's for free as samples, and I'm very pleased. My bad - I forgot the Canon digital cameras are now called PowerShot.

Samsung NV7

This is a nice camera with an amazing zoom, but it is larger than the Canon Elph so I might buy another Canon Elph to carry around with me wherever I go. The pictures are nice, but its not so hot in low light situations. The flash is always popping up when I don't want it to, delaying a snapshot I just want to take quickly.

Panasonic Lumix

This is a really nice camera. My model came with a Leica lens, how can you beat that, even for name recognition?

Kodak EasyShare

I bought two of these cameras because they were super cheap, but they price is reflective of the quality. The Elph's aren't too much more expensive so I'll got for them next time. New to Kodak's imagine suite is their line of inkjet printers which I've heard are very very good. I'm interested to see a printout for myself.

I'm going to review the Canon Elph line again and see what they have for the small cameras right now. I bet they have some great options.
<img width='1' height='1' Chain stores face a unique challenge of maintaining the consistency of their brand, while servicing the unique needs of each community they serve.

Recently, the "Are you going to buy that?" blog has shifted its focus more to the online realm, including various consumer product evaluations, online store, reviews, and a generally click-oriented focus. We're likely to continue this trend, so there may be more changes in the works.

We just wanted to keep you aware of our plans, and open up the comments for your feedback. Frankly, I trust Sears tool quality better than Staples, but that's just my opinion. I did get a Hon file cabinet from Staples awhile back that is top notch, but Hon is a reputable company. I'm not familiar with Sandusky.

I also happen to have two coupons for Staples that might come in handy. I think I'll get the Sandusky and see what happens. I'm glad I got the "premium", as anything less would be too flimsy. BUT, the one that arrived was pretty banged up in shipping so I requested a replacement. Its coming on Monday so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that its in better shape.
<img width='1' height='1' I was pleased with the online side of the equation, but was disappointed when I arrived at the store over 24 hours later and my order was still not ready. The customer service representative, who spent half of our interaction yawning, had to go fetch it and had trouble finding it. All in all, the process took about 15 minutes which wasn't bad, but I expected better.

When I arrived at the store, this is what I saw. Obviously CompUSA needs to fix the sign. While they are at it, they should install some of those bird-be-gone products to keep the pidgeons away.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_KxgKK1ItGhQ/Rc3mO-EqzjI/AAAAAAAAAFA/Dmlwr9VJ7Vw/s400/02-08-07_0957.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5029929503697849906" />

No More Staples at FatWallet

I'm unhappy that Staples has ended their cash-back relationship with FatWallet. Their store is very good: easy to browse, fast, and all with good pricing. They might not be as cheap as newegg.com, but they also have an amazing selection, including phones and telecom accessories.

However, they have a bizzare achilles heel. When checking out today, I entered some information into the shipping notes text area and unknowingly exceeded the 60 character minimum. This prevented my order from processing, and if I hadn't double checked, I would have closed my browser window without knowing and my order would not have processed.

A better method would be a fixed limit on the number of characters in the text area, with a javascript alert if the user exceeded 55 characters.

E-commerce retailers, or e-tailers as they're sometimes called need to be careful about anything that could stop the order from processing.

H&R Block Branches

I just found out recently that H&R Block has a bank under their umbrella - and I'm now wondering if they are using their tax offices as bank branches. Although I haven't started reading it yet, the gears have started turning.

A couple of thoughts:

1. The physical distance between the manufacturer and the consumer is getting wider. Most consumers live in America, and most products are built in China.

2. The conceptual distance between the manufacturer and the consumer is getting much smaller. A product can go from plant to shelf in one step.

I expect that within a very short period of time, the product will be able to go from the manufacturing plant directly to the customer, with no middle man.

Chances are, the hardest part of this evolution will be the disruption to the financial part of the supply chain. It seems like so much of our economy is built upon the structure of the supply chain, it would not be able to withstand such a disruption.

iPod vending machine

<img style="float:left; I came up with another reason that made me feel uncomfortable. I returned an item to J. Crew without a receipt, and since the item was then on sale, I had to get a gift card for the lower amount.

My gut tells me that the profit margins for those items which are returned without receipts are some of the most profitable transactions that retailers experience these days. No wait, I take that back. Gifts cards. Gift cards must be the most profitable. Its like free money!

Roomba Review

For Christmas this year, Santa brought our family an iRobot Roomba vacuum cleaner. It's small, red, and we named him "Rusty".

Roomba Review Summary
We charged him up and set him on the task - vacuum our small but dusty apartment. It took about an hour to make it through about 1000 square feet, and I have to say it did pretty good job for such a small machine, that only cost about $150.

Roomba Review Problems
The Roomba isn't perfect. Mine got stuck in two spots and was unable to recover, eventually shutting itself off and issuing a distress call (think unhappy robot sound). One spot was admittedly challenging - half on the rug, half off, under a table, with a power cord to get tangled in. The other spot has to be more common, simply under the couch sofa, where is got stuck by the flap.

Another issue is the Roomba's ability to figure out its way from a "trap". In my case, the trap was a dining room table chair, where the Roomba found itself unable to find its way out for approximately two minutes. I was so impressed when the Roomba finally made its way out from under the chair, only to be disappointed when less than 15 seconds later it went right back in. Again it took over two minutes to find its way out again. It repeated this process one more time before I intervened and set it on an entirely new course.

This really surprised me, as I expected that the design team, working with a limited supply of battery power would pull out all the stops to prevent wasted energy, like in the case of the "chair trap".

Roomba Review Benefits
I recommend the Roomba. It is inexpensive, small, lightweight, and automated. Therefore, the convenience factor is high, and the storage requirement is low. Any consumer product that has a positive return on investment (ROI), is gets a positive review in my opinion.

Do you own a Roomba? If so, I'd love to hear about your experiences with it.

Staples Coupon a bit late

I got my Staples business card statement in the mail today, and it includeed a coupon expiring on December 23, 2006. Chances are you've heard of black friday. That's the day after Thanksgiving when retailers get into the "black", meaning they become profitable due to sales for Christmas, or whatever gift giving reason one may have. Its a day off for most and prime time to get some shopping done.

Cyber Monday has evolved out of the fact that not everyone enjoys shopping mobs (myself included), and the fact that most people are allowed to shop online while at work. Its pretty incredible actually. I see the reasoning for people thinking that they have better internet access at the office, but shopping online while you work, isn't exactly working. I have to admit, I've done it myself. I guess it's better than blogging at work!!!!

Montillio's Bakery

I'm watching the Phantom Gourmet on channel 38 right now and they are featuring Montillio's Bakery. I think one of the reasons that they have succeeded is because of their graphic design, because that helps people identify the store, and bring them in for a try.

Once they are in the store, its all up to the cooking to bring the customer back again. The cooking is more important in the long run, but the graphic design is important to start.

Check out their website and see for yourself:

Rosie's Bakery

Jordan's Furniture

Awhile back Warren Buffet bought Jordan's Furniture, but word on the street is that Berkshire Hathaway is trying to sell it because its not doing so hot. And they are a great company to their employees (so I've heard). Here in Massachusetts, they even have a van that drives around looking for stranded motorists called the CVS/Samaritan van. (Does anyone know if this is affiliated with the "Samaritans"? Just curious.)

Anyway, what I wanted to mention was that I saw one of their trucks on the highway recently, and it had an "Encrypta" seal on the back. That will definitely help items from "falling off the back of the truck"! Encrypta offers reusable time seals, so that you can tell if and when something has been opened. Very cool!

Besides that, the big news is that Black Friday is coming up, where all the retailers shine. So far, everyone is talking about the buy-online, pickup in-store phenomenon. I've used it myself, though I'm not crazy about it. I do expect to see more on-line / in-store integration though.

Electronic Shopping Carts

Super Stop & Shop has launched a new program for shopping cart guides. Called the "Shopping Buddy" the interactive LCD menu is like bringing the register along with you while you shop. You scan the products in as you go, and when you're finished, all you do is pay at the register.

This is a very cool concept, and will potentially save the store and customers a lot of time.

Update: My wife and I tried out the new shopping buddy at Stop & Shop over the weekend. It was actually very cool. It alerted you to savings, and while it took a little getting used to, I think it will actually save a ton of time while shopping. It would be extra awesome if you could setup your shopping list online, and then use the shopping buddy to help you keep track of it, as well as show you where everything is. I couldn't have agreed with him more.

Customers' perceptions of product pricing is a complex and difficult equation. The simple curve of supply and demand just does not fit into the complex factors present in the lives of consumers today as well as it used to.

With the success of the convenient store, shopping as entertainment, and the explosion of the merchandising industry, consumers have begun to appreciate and value the entire experience of a product. This experience can include the extremity of a good "deal" - whereas the purchaser bought something solely because alternate purchases would cost more, or for the amount of time required to purchase the product, among many other possibilities.

As the actual activity of shopping plays a more active role in consumers' minds and buying decisions, retailers, consumer product manufacturers, and service providers will need to revisit their strategies for maintaining competitive advantage, high margins, and customer satisfaction.

As I run my own company, I have many times run into a situation where my role as salesperson had a drastic effect on the customers' satisfaction. Even if the "deal" that the customer received was very good and generally unavailable at that price on the general market, if I delivered it without hesitation, it was perceived as having lower value than it actually did. Perhaps if I was feigned reluctance they would have been more satisfied in the end run. Sales and negotiation tactics really are related!

Comcast versus Google versus Firefox

Uh-oh. Something is going badly with Comcast, Google, and Firefox. Here in the Boston area, a traceroute on the Comcast network to google over the http (port 80) protocol is stopped at above.net. Something fishy is going on.

My guess is that Comcast is trying to do something fishy with internet acceleration, Internet Explorer, and the like. When I was trying to debug the issue, it seemed as though my client was downloading more information that I had actually requested.

Hmmmmm. I called in to Comcast to see if there was a problem and they said no. Apparently there is, I've confirmed this with two other sources - a friend of mine who is also on the Comcast network, and I found a blog with the same type of reports, Bostonist I think.

Yes, here's the link:

Its Not Firefox... I actually spent over an hour there, looking for some items, while waiting for some items to find me.

One item I've been looking for is a quality distance measurement tool for quickly measuring room dimensions. They have something like that at Home Depot, but it seemed like low quality, too expensive, and it took a 9-volt battery, which was nonsensical to me.

I did find some screen repair supplies, as well as some glue sticks, two items I was not looking for.

After I was finished shopping, I went to the self checkout and rung up some items. One item, a set of small plastic bins was marked as $5 marked down to $4.18. The self checkout monitor reported needing assistance for entering the price, and when the Home Depot employee ( a very nice and helpful woman, albeit very busy with the problematic self checkout registers ) entered its UPC code, the item rang up for clearance, only $9000. Obviously this was a mistake, so she manually entered the price.

As I continued, an older woman was waiting for her husband to get his turn with the assistant, and so she sat down on what looked like a bench, but is actually a scale that the self checkout registers use to weigh the bagging items. This caused all sorts of problems, and if this post is worth anything, it will send a message to Home Depot to PUT A CHAIR BY THE SELF CHECKOUT REGISTERS!!! This is the second time I've seen this happen so it needs to be resolved.

2006 Fusion Awards

I just received an email that the 2006 Fusion Awards have been annouced. I've heard many reviews say that it is the more "manicured" home improvement store, compared to Home Depot, and thus more acceptable to women.

The store does have a more organized appearance. There are more colorful signs, and everything seems cleaner. As a reference, it took me about 45 minutes to buy the following:
* One (1) blue tarp
* Two (2) fire extinguishers
* Two (2) pad locks
* One (1) door latch

Which I find an acceptable amount of time. It would have been faster if the locks were not mislabeled - they rang up as $5.49, instead of $4.49, like posted on the shelf. I went back to the shelf and saw that the box of locks was simply in the wrong place on the shelf. This really annoys me, and it caused major problems for me with Office Max. Also, I hadn't planned on buying the fire extinguishers, but when I saw them I remembered that I needed two of them.

Overall, I don't think Lowes is much different than Home Depot. I did notice that the price of an in-line duct fan switch was about $7 higher than Home Depot's price.

Overall, I give Lowes a positive review. In purchasing the items, I used the self checkout. The interface reminded me of the one they have at IKEA, but this one worked much better.

Self Checkout Registers

Self check out registers are awesome, except when they don't work. So far I have used them at four retailers:

* Home Depot
* Super Stop & Shop
* Shaw's
* IKEA

The first two, Home Depot and Super Stop & Shop, got theirs to work. It is possible that they are using the best of breed vendor. Anyone know who it is? The second two, don't seem to have gotten it right.

Supermarkets have it tough. Most of the time, the stores are overcrowded and chaotic. Noone really wants to be there - neither customer, cashier or clerk, or even bagger. To boot, the products are complex, perishable, fragile, large, and inexpensive, all factors which make the food retail business a competitive one. It is components like a self checkout register that can give a general food retailer that competitive edge.

Here are a few tips to make sure your self checkout register is working properly:
* Make sure it can read coupons
* Make sure there is a staff member on hand to help confused customers or registers
* Fix "out-of-order" registers immediately - even if it stops accepting cash, credit, or debit
* Make one of the registers an express, less than 12 items aisle
* Perhaps even give customers an incentive to use the self checkout
* Make sure the scale system does not overpower basic logic and procedure

That last tip regarding the scale system needs a little more explanation than the others. Most self checkout systems attempt to prevent fraud by weighing the scanned item as they are placed into the bagging area, to make sure that customers don't scan one item and take another. This safety feature is often the cause of a disastrous checkout. What happens is the machine repeatedly states "item removed from bagging area", or "please place your item in the bagging area before scanning more items". Confused customers are ready to give up as they try to place and return their scanned items into the bagging area to their best capabilities. Most often, a store employee will come over and simply override the system. I've seen this happen quite a lot, and its never prevented any fraud.

RFID (radio frequency identification) tags will help solve this problem, but they still won't be available cheap enough to put on every box of cereal for some time now. Until then, I'll only use the self checkout register when I have a clean and simple transaction that I know will go through smoothly and quickly.

Furniture Stores for real

We're chimed in how much we dislike annoying furniture commercials:

Annoying furniture store commercials!

But what about the furniture stores themselves? What are they like inside? Well, my wife and I went shopping at a few this past weekend and here's what we found:

Jordan's Furniture
Jordan's has an expansive clearance section, but in my humble opinion, the prices are high, and the fixtures are junk. The show room has a much nicer presentation, but again I found the offerings were a more polished set of the same: high prices for low quality fixtures.

IKEA
IKEA has much better prices, but everytime I go there it takes so long to find anything. In this instance, we finally found something we liked, so we went to the self service stocking area, only to find they were out of stock. Doh!

Target
We first shopped Target online, and then my wife went there tonight. We were able to shop online (me) and in-store (she) at the same time. We decided on what we wanted to buy, and she confirmed the quality was up to par, and the pricing was much better than the alternatives. We paid $500 for two 6 drawer dressers, $250 each.

Target: Mission 6-Drawer Dresser is a good deal.

Please note, this item is VERY heavy.

Seattle Coffee Inside Borders Books

I visited a Borders Books store last night to buy some books for work, and noticed there was a Seattle's Best Coffee cafe there. The coffee was very good, so I bought a few bags for myself and to bring home to the mainland as gifts.

A little information about Kauai Coffee Company:
* They have the largest coffee plantation in Hawaii - over three thousand acres.
* It used to be a sugar cane plantation.
* They have on average 200 visitors to their retail store daily in the busy season.
* The retail store employs six part-time staff members.
* Their packaging and shipping operation is 24/7 during the harvesting season, and they ship anywhere in the US.

They compete with other island growers like Kona Coffee.

For more information, check out their website:

Kauai Coffee Company Online Store
